Down but not out, the Overthrow Boxing Club is assisting the neediest in the community with grassroots food assistance at its doorstep.

But owner Power Malu is not throwing in the towel. Outside the Bleecker Street storefront is a so-called community fridge, stocked with plant based, organic, foods as well as canned goods. All free for the take.

As with other “fridges” that have popped up around the city during the pandemic, passersby take what they need and drop off what they don’t. Sort of like the take-a-penny-leave-penny tray at the local bodega.

Meanwhile, Overthrow has largely been dormant thanks to Covid-related restrictions. The empty boxing club equals a large debt that must be overcome to keep moving forward. Pay the bill or shut down.

The struggle is real.
